While some of the state herds continue to decline, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has reported an increase in two of its caribou herds, the Teshekpuk and the Central Arctic.
In 2002, the Teshekpuk and Central Arctic herd’s populations were estimated at 45,000 and 32,000. Today, both herds have estimated population numbers of 60,000+.
The ADF&G credits the increase in population to low predation, good weather conditions, good habitat and high reproduction.
