At the heart of the Bloody Mary is an interchangeable collar system. Three different levels of thermal protection are a zipper pull away. When the temperature is dropping fast, zip in the heaviest of the collars and feel the snug warmth that is sealed in the main body section.

If the collar system is the heart of the Bloody Mary, the French Fat Grey Goose down is the muscle. Valandré only uses down from the French Fat Grey Goose, a bird capable of migrating at 33,000 feet (10.000m) in -60°F (-50°C) temperatures for days on end. The zipper is a top quality, 68 inch (175cm), auto-blocking YKK. As the zipper automatically "blocks" in the selected position, the Freja offers a efficient way of regulating the ventilation. And the zipper is protected with a storm flap, to avoid icing of the zip.

The hood is a perfect 3D "half moon" construction, offering a maximum of down insulation to the extreme forehead, so you can now forget sleeping with your wool hood on. Though very efficient, once drawn down, the hood of the Freja is large enough to offer a possibility of ventilation of the head, once the bag is used in higher temperatures.

The draft collar is as perfected as the rest. Basically it's a 3D collar, where the shoulder width is compensated into the shape, hence offering more collar on the shoulders than on the neck and throat, which is calculated within the anatomical shape of the collar. Once again a semi-elastic draw cord is integrated into the collar, offering a precise adjustment and comfort.

Made on the principles of the Shocking Blue and the La Fayette, the Mirage will set the standards in its range. This time the benchmark is 26.3 oz (773 g) total, a pack size of only 4.8 liters, and an extreme temperature rating at 1.4°F (-17°C).

Field testers have taken the Mirage to 14°F (-10°C) wearing a base layer of underwear and a fleece vest. Even if these are not recommended temperature ratings (metabolism etc. should be considered), field tests have certainly underlined the extraordinary performance of the Mirage.

The "half moon" hood, developed in the Shocking Blue concept, was adapted to the Odin in 2003. This hood offers a maximum insulation to the very extreme forehead and the incorporated static draw cord system offers the ultimate precision. A precision as sharp as a razor blade - thanks!

The draft collar is a 3D development. It is anatomical in the sense that it compensates for the different lengths needed to protect the shoulders, and at the same time has less width on the neck and on the throat.

As you move down the bag the Valandre’s Tubular Bell construction shows itself by allowing the inner and outer fabric to maximize the fat French grey goose down. The foot section presents a trapezoidal form allowing the feet to naturally fall away from each other. The SWING replaced some years ago, the Valandré reference bag: the Classic, with the following improvements: The SWING ads a improved and perfectly balanced anatomical shape (Bloody Mary style), with a reversed trapezoid and raised foot box by incorporation of lateral triangles.

The hood of the SWING was improved by adding a central piece of fabric next to two lateral. The static draw cord runs perfectly, making the hood easy to adjust with high precision.

But the central key improvement on the SWING is a serious increase in the inside volume. And with a perfectly balanced anatomical shape, the SWING offers great comfort with a high level of security.

The security issue, is based upon the inside volume, that allows the user to layer up seriously, without risking compressing the down membrane, for when you hit unexpected low temperatures.

The precision of the cut, is exactly the same as on our elite equipment, all fabric stitched are over-locked on the inside and all quality aspects are under strict control in this bag...So you are not taking any risk with a SWING.

The Nuptse was developed from Maurice Barrard's Makalu concept bag in which the straight H box walls were slanted allowing to "stuff" the bag with a maximum of down. But "slanting" changes the essence of the bag. As the baffles in the Odin are in a 90°, we use a baffle height of 9 cm, but once slanted into a 45°, 14 cm baffles are needed. This difference in baffle width (height) changes the empty weight of the shell from 650g in M for the Odin,to 720g in a M size Thor.. The second difference between the Odin and the Thor is that the Odin is a 27 compartment bag while the Thor is a 26 compartment bag. Otherwise they are identical.

It can be discussed whether "slanting the baffles" does just have the unwelcome side-effect, of adding unnecessary weight to the sleeping bag shell and increasing the compressed volume.

Whatever......once filled with 50,2oz (1424g)of a totally mature and specially selected gray goose 95/05, the Thor does not weight more than 75.6oz (2144g).

Lamalite is unique in that it is laminated to the material, eliminating the need to quilt the insulation. This allows the insulation to have more loft and therefore better insulating properties.
